How to Save Money at Island Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The Thursday before the Memorial Day weekend 🤦🏻‍♀️ my elderly Westie was exhibiting signs of a UTI, so I called our regular vet for an appointment. Understandably, they didn’t have any available appointments until the following week. They offered me the option of dropping her off and the vets would try to work her into their already packed schedule, but I figured that would completely stress her out so I decided to search for other options. Island Animal Clinic, which is only a few minutes away from our location, had an appointment for first thing the next morning so I booked it. When we arrived we were greeted promptly and warmly. We were shown to an exam room almost immediately 👍 A vet tech came in and confirmed all our information (they had successfully received our dog’s records from the regular vet). We waited a bit for the vet—not too long—and Dr. Gardner and another tech came in and introduced themselves. They were both warm, attentive, and very gentle with our very scared pup. They talked their way through the exam, explaining everything in everyday language, and they handled our dear pup with the level of love and care that you could only hope for from a vet clinic. ❤️ The tech did a skilled clean catch and the sample went under the microscope. We were sent home with an antibiotic and told she should feel better in 24-48 hours. Within 12 hours I could tell she was feeling better, so hopefully we won’t have to switch to a different antibiotic later. Our pets are like family members, and it is always reassuring to find a vet clinic that treats them as such. The professionalism, care and patience that was shown to us by the staff at the Island Animal Clinic was top notch—we will definitely consider switching to them for our regular vet services. 😎

There is a reason Island Animal Clinic gets 4.9 stars. Believe the reviews. We’re snowbirds with a sick furry kid. You know how stressful that can be — away from home with a sick pet on a weekend. But I was able to make an appointment online within 24 hours. I’m sure if it was an emergency, I could have been seen sooner. Dr. Gardner was great. She listened to our concerns and did a thorough exam of our dog, Lulu. While we don’t yet know exactly what is wrong with Lulu (lab tests are pending), I’m confident that Dr. Gardner will figure it out. Don’t hesitate for a minute to take your sick animal here. Amanda, the receptionist, and the entire staff are super-friendly. You can tell they like both animals and people. The prices are fair, too. I would not hesitate for a minute to take my sick animal here.

We are vacationing here with our dog who had a scare and chose this clinic because of its location and received the best care possible. I’d fly from our hometown just to be able to bring our dog to such an amazing, kind, knowledgeable veterinary. Dr. Fitzgerald quickly recognized the issue and because it took a short amount of time to tackle the problem- didn't even charge us a penny. 🙏 We are so grateful!

Great staff and customer service from the moment we walked in to the time we left the clinic. The tech staff also made a follow up. I never got this type of customer service at the Palma Sola branch.

The staff was able to get my 6 yr old Great Pyrenees in for a check up the next day when I called to have her vomiting checked out. She had tossed her cookies the afternoon we got home from boarding, which had happened a couple times over the weekend. It was concerning enough to warrant a vet trip because vomiting 3 or 4 times over several days is nothing to ignore, especially in a big dog. The kind and knowledgeable staff and veterinarian did a thorough intake. We then agreed on the least invasive course of treatment; start Allie on a bland diet after the injection of Serenia to calm her belly issues. I so appreciate the Island Vet Clinic's staff's quick and attentive response to my call for an appointment ensure nothing more serious was going on. Allie is doing just fine now! She may have been upset from my absence while in boarding, but it was best to have her checked out just in case!!
