How to Save Money at Veterinary Eye Institute Gainesville

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST I have 4 beautiful beloved Persian cats with various medical/eye conditions. We have been coming here regularly from Jacksonville for about a year now because the ophthalmologist in Jacksonville misdiagnosed ALL OF THEM and mistreated them, causing immense suffering, ulcers, thousands of dollars and a lot of time wasted, and watching them suffer which broke my heart I decided to transfer their care to Dr Berkowski, and let me tell you, and I am not exaggerating, he is the MOST amazing veterinarian I have ever met. He is not only knowledgeable, patient but the dedication he has for his patient's wellbeing is truly hard to find these days. I would say his goal is to provide the best possible outcome that is best for the patient - unfortunately most practices don't operate this way. In my opinion Veterinary Eye Institute Gainsville is like a Mayo Clinic for pets!! Hard to find value based service but for very reasonable prices! Dr Berkowsky explained everything from the beginning, and developed a care plan for each of my boys that works best for their individual needs and health conditions. I especially appreciated that he provided a very detailed explanation why a specific surgery would not work for Jamie given his rare health condition and previous unique negative reactions to a lot of medications that are otherwise tolerated well within the general population. Keep in mind this was the surgery I brought him here for. Instead of taking advantage from a client not knowing how bad the outcome would have been, his only goal was Jamie's wellbeing. And he fixed ALL the DAMAGE the previous vet had caused my boys. All of them are healthy and happy now and I know that they are in the best hands possible when I bring them here. Is it worth it to drive two hours each way every time? 100%. It is worth every mile, minute and penny. Thank you Dr Berkowsky for everything you do for my boys: Joey, Jamie, Berci and Fritzi.

Cannot recommend the VEI enough. The staff are wonderful, kind and patient. My American bulldog, Roscoe was coming every few weeks to have his eyes checked. Roscoe did not like strangers, he especially did not like vet visits, and had to be muzzled for visits. Despite this the team was always so kind and patient with him. They always assured me he was a very good boy during his exams and I think that can be attributed to how gentle and patient they were with him. I trusted this team and knew he was in good hands. Roscoe recently passed away so I had to call them to cancel his upcoming appointment and let them know what happened. I got a letter in the mail after he passed and the kind things they wrote in it brought me to tears. This is a team that truly cares about their patients, even the difficult ones. If any of my dogs ever need to see an eye specialist I know for a fact I will bring them here. Thank you for the exceptional care you guys provided Roscoe, and thank you for the card, it meant the world to me.

All the staff from the front desk receptionist, the techs and the veterinarians are kind, patient, compassionate, highly skilled, detail-oriented and everything you would want for your pet undergoing an exam and/or procedure. My dog is “vet phobic” and from the first minute we were there, the staff listened to me, dealing with him and his idiosyncrasies extremely well, and he was calmer than I’ve ever seen him at the vet. The facility is clean, quiet, very professional and welcoming. My dog needed a mass removed from around his eye and the surgery results were outstanding. Nothing but “good dog” praises for this practice!

The nurses were gentle and cared for my dog (Abby) They treated her well as if she was their own! They listened to me and asked me questions about how she was and how she reacted to her medication. Shortly afterward the dr. Came in and greeted Abby kindly. During her treatment time the Dr. examined her throughout the examination process with care and gentleness talking to her and keeping her calm. After the examination he took time to explain her results and when I asked about my concerns he took the time to explain. Checking out of my visit the front desk person was very warm and helpful.
