How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Brought my dog in for his annual checkup and they were great with him. He's usually nervous at the vet but the staff took their time and kept him calm. Dr. was informative without being pushy about extra services. Reasonably priced for the area.

Last week I had to take my 15 yo dog in to be put to sleep. Hind legs giving out, difficult walking, tumor kept getting bigger was in constant pain They quoted me $200 to help him cross over. (I was bringing him back home ) get to the office the tech in the back (cold hearted, no empathy) said they had to do a full exam then the Vet wld determine IF he needs to be put down. The old guy was suffering. Kept jacking the price up to almost $400. I said nope, I took him to Shores Vet where they were so kind, Very understanding and sympathetic. They now have my business

This has taken me over 2 years to finally write a review for how incredible the staff are at this clinic. Back in 2024, my beloved cat Sammy was sadly and unexpectedly hit by a car and killed. My parents saw his body before I woke and, in a selfless attempt to keep me from seeing him that way, they went home to grab a container to bring him back in. In that short amount of time, another kind neighbor took the time to generously bring his body to this Banfield Pet Hospital. Even though there was nothing they could do for our Sammy as he had already passed, they did everything they could and more for me and my family. Not only did they accept him with grace from our kind neighbor, but they took the time to place him into a clean container, cover him up for privacy, and they even drew his face and name on the box with his notable face markings. Nothing could have prepared me for seeing that sweet drawn face of him on that box, one that I could remember rather than seeing him in a poor condition. Not only does this vet clinic take care of their animals they receive, but they go above and beyond to take care of the animal's owners too. And for anyone reading this from the clinic, I've never had the courage to thank you in person as I fear I'd break down into a puddle of tears. But I pray my words encapsulate how incredible your kindness and grace meant to me and my family during such a sorrowful time, and how much it moved us. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. ♡

I am extremely disappointed with the level of organization and customer service at this location. Upon arrival, there was no greeting or acknowledgment, and no assistance was offered when weighing my dog. Staff members observed from a distance rather than providing help. Additionally, I asked three separate employees to explain why my pet was being prescribed a particular medication, and none were able to provide a clear or satisfactory answer. I ultimately spoke with the manager on duty, who was neither approachable nor helpful in addressing my concerns. When the prescription was initially provided, I was not given any instructions on how to properly administer the medication to my pet. After contacting the office for clarification, I was informed that the wrong medication had been dispensed. The following day, I was told this was incorrect and that I would need to pay for another round of medication because it had been administered incorrectly, despite not having received proper guidance in the first place. Instead of taking accountability I was told to pay for another round of medication. Overall, this experience reflected a lack of organization, communication, and accountability. It appears the facility may be operating beyond its capacity, as interactions felt rushed and concerns were not thoroughly addressed. Talking to anyone of authority appears as an inconvenience to them. As a result of this experience, I will be seeking veterinary services elsewhere.
