How to Save Money at Colonial Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have a very fear reactive german shepherd so taking him anywhere is very stressful for everyone. the staff here were absolutely amazing in accommodating us!! they made sure to clear the lobby for us of any dogs coming and and even asked waiting customers on the way out to move their pets to the corners of the waiting room to give him much needed space. most places brush us off and say they dont make accommodations or take “aggressive” animals. I have to point out the vet tech we had also. most vet techs are scared of big scary dogs but she was amazing!! she didn’t back away from him or anything which helped his anxiety so much!! she even allowed us to bring his brother in for some support. the vet herself was very helpful as well. though I did find it a little pricey, finding a flexible and empathetic staff is priceless! plan on bringing these dogs back in the future. they gave my GSD his space and quickly realized hes just a big scaredy cat. thank you!!

The staff was very friendly and the doctor was very knowledgeable and honest about our babies surgery. They were able to get us in between appointments to stich our green cheek conure's beak that was accidentally shut in a door. The doctor even called the day after we took her back home to see how she was doing. We would definitely recommend him everyone. We are so thankful they were able to get her fixed up.

They saved my geckos life!!! My leopard gecko Ozzie had what appeared to be a huge abscess at the base of his tail. I thought he would need to be euthanized as I thought it was possibly a tumor. Dr. Amy took a look at him and immediately knew he was impacted. Her and her team were able to drain the infection, which then made my gecko instantly feel better. They then gave him an injection of antibiotics and he was good to go!!! I still can’t believe I was able to take him home with me, not only safe, but healthy. Did I mention I was an emergency patient and told to come in with no problem? 10 Stars go to DR. Amy and all staff at colonial animal hospital. My heart is so warm.

I genuinely cannot speak highly enough of this place. Our puppy Paisley always has the most professional and thorough care. After vet shopping for a while, we were able to call this place home. She was given incredible care during her spay at a reasonable price, especially considering the area in which we are located. Additionally, they're veterinarian, was able to correctly diagnose an allergy that paisley had, which was originally misdiagnosed as a fungal infection. After being prescribed, an allergy med her tummy looks and feels so much better! It is great to see people who genuinely care about our animals and protect owners from predatory costs!

Thank you, Colonial!! We found a neonate kitten a few weeks back and she just would NOT poop. Poor miserable kitty. They got us in ASAP, treating our little one right away, and providing proactive medications to keep her going. Unfortunately, it took a few more trips to get her fully turned around, but the staff was with us every step of the way and understood our budget limitations. Dr. Bosecker was terrific on our last visit. Little Leia is growing like a weed now, and who would’ve thought we’d be kitty parents. (Bona fide dog parents) However, we think Kitty might be a Master Luke rather than a Princess Leia. Ooops. We will check in our next visit. Thanks for being there and for not breaking the bank!!
