How to Save Money at BluePearl Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I highly recommend this BluePearl location. I had to put my dog down to an unknown heart condition that came to a head that day. Every single employee I spoke to - whether it was a desk receptionist, assistant, nurse, or doctor - was extremely kind, sensitive, and treated us and our dog beautifully. They explained everything in detail and didn't rush us to make any decisions, and were very receptive and understanding of our concerns and questions. Obviously, pet ER visits aren't cheap, but they made several plans of care at various prices for our dog depending on what we were able to do as well as what we were comfortable doing to our dog. We made the decision to put our dog down, and they tried their best to keep her comfortable while we went home to gather some belongings and treats. The room for euthanasia was separated away from the rest of the treatment rooms and waiting area, and it wasn't decorated or built like a regular treatment room either. They gave us all the time we wanted with our dog, before and after euthanasia, and we very careful with our dog afterwards. The doctor who did the euthanasia took some charges off the total as well which was amazing and wasn't at all needed, but much appreciated. A big thank you to everyone who played a part that day! I'm sure my dog, who isn't a big fan of the doctors, had the best medical experience she could've had given the circumstances. Nina sends everyone a kiss and a tail wag.

I was told by 2 different vets (one didn't even actually SEE my cat) that she was in heart failure. My original vet sent me to Blue Pearl for an evaluation on her. I am soooo glad that I went there! After meeting the cardiologist, Dr. Merrick Fultz, all of my anxiety went out the door! He was confident, precise, detail oriented, and very clear in his description of how some issues may appear to be something very different. That was the case with my cat, Lily. She is NOT in heart failure but does have some respitory issues, which can be handled with medication. I loved Dr. Fultz's bedside manner and his communication with me. I will be forever grateful to him for caring enough about my sweet girl, to dig deeper and find out what the truth really was, with her health. Do not hesitate to go to Blue Pearl Pet Hospital for a professional evaluation, from a SPECIALIST, if you have any questions at all about a diognosis from your vet. It's worth the piece of mind, to get a second opinion from these specially trained Dr.s in thier feild. I can't say enough great things about this place and Dr Merrick Fultz. God bless and thank you for letting Lily and me get to a calm but knowledgeable place. Angie and Lily

What a blessing they were! They saved my dog’s life!! I had a lot of questions but they were kind, thorough, and very understanding! They saw my cry baby side concerned about my baby doggie. But I’m a program lead for a large educational organization in Tampa Bay and they will always be highly recommended to anyone in the company or out of the company. We are so blessed to have them kind of close by!

My cat Ollie is a nightmare at the vet. To have him lay still for a heart scan was seemingly impossible despite our attempts to calm him with medication. Dr. Fultz and his team were patient, understanding, and caring in their handling of my problem child. They successfully gave Ollie his echocardiogram after much kitty ado and delivered good news to me concerning his condition. Dr. Fultz was a joy to speak with as were the technicians. Professional but down to earth and made everything easy to understand. Thank you all for your time and care.

Blue Pearl is such a great place for your pet’s care. All the staff is friendly and helpful and the facility is spotless. Dr. Fultz, the cardiologist couldn’t have been better. He spent time a lot of time with us, answered all our questions, and explained everything. I could tell he genuinely cared for my little Callie and he was positive and encouraging. I highly recommend him if your pet needs attention to their heart. Such a positive experience which helps so much at a stressful time.
