How to Save Money at Ocean Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ocean Animal Hospital — Cocoa Beach, FL I can’t say enough wonderful things about Ocean Animal Hospital and their amazing team led by Dr. Gabriel Young. Our dog Yoshi, who we recently adopted, underwent a much-needed dental cleaning after nearly ten years of plaque buildup and early gum disease. Dr. Gabe and his incredible nurses, Tina and Kat, were absolutely phenomenal from start to finish. They showed such compassion and skill throughout the process — from preparing Yoshi for anesthesia, to the procedure itself, to helping him through recovery. Their patience and genuine care made all the difference, and Yoshi came home looking (and feeling) like a new dog. The clinic itself is spotless, welcoming, and has this cool, laid-back Cocoa Beach surfer vibe — modern, professional, but with a warmth that instantly puts both pets and owners at ease. I highly recommend Ocean Animal Hospital to anyone looking for a veterinary team that truly treats your furry friend like family. Their genuine care and comfort are clearly their highest mission, and it shows in everything they do.

I can't say thank you enough! They have treated a diabetic dog, an outdoor cat, anda malnourished rescue pit bull over the last 5 years or so and have been wonderful. Doctor Gabe and staff have helped me numerous times in difficult situations which has meant the world to me. Thank you so much

I left this appointment feeling incredibly uncomfortable and honestly shocked by the interaction I had with the veterinarian. I originally called earlier in the week to discuss my dogs ongoing stomach issues and ask whether a certain medicine might be an option for her. I was told through a technician that the doctor wanted to review dosing information and that I should call back when her current antibiotics were almost complete. After not receiving a callback before the long holiday weekend, I followed up again because I was concerned about my dog going several days without guidance. When I came into the office to speak with the veterinarian, the conversation immediately felt confrontational and defensive rather than collaborative. Instead of calmly discussing my questions and concerns, I felt lectured and spoken down to for simply asking about a medication and following up after multiple calls. The veterinarian repeatedly framed the situation as me “demanding” treatment, which was never my intention. I was trying to advocate for my senior dog and understand our options. I understand veterinarians are busy and may not always agree with a client’s suggestions, but there is a respectful and professional way to communicate that. Unfortunately, this interaction left me feeling small, uncomfortable, and discouraged during an already stressful situation involving my pet’s health

***Amazing Vet*** I had a beloved vet that I trusted w/ my life and my dog Cooper. Due to miscommunication & incompetent office staff and the Dr. not owning up to it when he finally called me back, my baby suffered needlessly for 6 hrs. I was so angry and desperate I called Ocean Animal Hospital in absolute hysterics asking for help as my dog had to be put down immediately. Without question they got me throught it. I drove there not knowing anyone and together what needed to be done, was done. It was the most painful, gut wrenching experience that I don’t know how I will get over but they handled it with such class and professionalism and care that I could never thank them enough. The doctor, the whole staff, everyone was so amazing. They came to my rescue in my darkest hour. It was so peaceful and they gave us all the time we needed to say goodbye and were incredible with us and our grief. Everything was handled amazing, even picking up his ashes and all the care. Someday when my heart can bare it I will get another dog and will never use anyone else. Thank you so much Dr. Gabe and staff. I wish I never had to meet you but from the bottom of my heart when I had to, I am thankful you were there for me & my family. ❤️💔❤️ RIP~Cooper 2009-2024
