How to Save Money at Sierra Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our dog had an issue with his paw, I called, they got us an appointment right away. Everyone was great with our dog, he doesn't typically do well at the Vet. They did a great job with him. He had to have surgery, they kept us in the loop every step of the way. I felt the price we paid was very reasonable for the services we received.

I have, unfortunately, had to visit Sierra Animal Hospital several times over the last few months…. For each of my three fur babies lol (two male cats and one German shepherd!). All is well, praise God, and a big thank you to Dr. Johnson and team!! Dr. Johnson is the absolute best veterinarian Ive worked with, her care and compassion for animals is clear while she exemplifies what any medical professional should be; deeply knowledgeable, thorough, thoughtful, methodical, grounded, compassionate, and professional while still being warm and welcoming. She is thorough in not only her medical practice but in explaining veterinary care in lay terms so everything is easily digestible in order to make the best plan of care for your animals. Additionally, I love that they always take stress and environment into consideration—it’s one of the ways I know that this office truly cares about what they do and it’s never about money. If I brought in one of my pets and due to them being stressed or something else going on, they’ll take a break and schedule time for me to come back again to try again and don’t charge another penny. This has happened twice for us and I’m always left knowing that my pets well-being is top priority. Everyone in the office is always kind, and I trust them wholeheartedly with my pets, every time. I also trust them not to price gauge me or charge unnecessarily for things, as costs are always openly discussed before any tests or treatment even occurs. If things were to be expensive, I fully trust in the rapport Dr. Johnson has built with me, I know she would tell me what is and is not necessary and in what order to proceed with care to also be financially mindful. I cannot sing their praises enough! Unless it’s an emergency and nobody is in office, I will always go to Sierra!

BEWARE: I would give them a zero stars if I could. Dr. Biggs is the worst! I took my sweet little miniature Labradoodle to Sierra because she was making coughing choking sounds. Dr. Biggs asked me to demonstrate the coughing choking sounds three or four times. I felt like she wanted to watch the video later to get a chuckle. They did an x-ray and supposedly had a specialist read the results. They said they would call me asap once they had the results (possibly the same day)after many calls more than 24 hours later, they said she was fine (dr. Biggs didn’t bother calling me. She had her assistant call us.) Our bill that day was $1000 and when I asked why they needed a specialist to look at her x-rays DR. Biggs said it was best. Now I am in my early 60s and I’ve had animals all my life and have never been told that. I agreed because I was concerned for my baby. While we were at the office I asked if they could check her urine as she has had stones in the past, and they actually stuck a needle into her bladder instead of just taking her outside and getting a catch. My baby came back into the room, scared to death after that. I called a couple days later and left a message for the manager as I wanted an explanation. The manager called me back later (leaving a vm)without talking to me and assumed what questions I had saying “they didn’t want to leave any stone unturned” which was why they wanted a specialist to read the X-rays which sounds ridiculous because if they were that concerned, they might’ve wanted to call me back. I felt that Dr. Biggs hurt my baby without any regard for her. It’s been six months and I’m still mad. I’m not speaking for all the vets at Seirra as I have heard they have good ones but the manager and Dr. Biggs was terrible! Heads up: I will be asking for her file and the x-rays and the name of the specialist that said she was fine. I ended up taking her to Blue Pearl where she ended up dying a couple months later of issues in her lungs that was clearly noticeable on x-rays. I’m still mad. I’m upset because she passed, but I’m mad because they should’ve seen this but instead they just charged me a bunch of money and sent me on my way.

The entire staff demonstrates genuine care for both their patients and their pets. The veterinary technicians and doctors dedicate ample time to thoroughly diagnose, clearly explain, and thoughtfully treat each case. I highly recommend this veterinary practice. I’m so happy I found them for my Lab puppy!
