How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Worst Banfield experience I’ve had — and all of this happened just yesterday. They rescheduled my dog’s spay appointment THREE times: * The first time, it was booked on a day when no doctor was even available. * The second time, we were told the doctor had an emergency and couldn’t perform the procedure. * The third time — yesterday — we were informed that the doctor on duty doesn’t even perform spay surgeries. This level of disorganization is unacceptable, especially for something as important as a surgical procedure. On top of that, the “lead” or supervisor had a very poor attitude — dismissive and unprofessional, as if customer concerns didn’t matter. The only bright spot at this location was Lili. She was kind, helpful, and professional throughout. She truly stands out and deserves recognition. Thankfully, I contacted another location in Longwood, and the difference was night and day. They were attentive, efficient, and able to schedule my dog’s procedure for today. My poodle is currently in surgery, and I’m hopeful everything goes smoothly. Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend considering other Banfield locations if you’re looking for reliable and professional care. (Longwood has way better reviews)

This office is not helpful made us come every month or so for a refill, never telling us we had other options that were less expensive and with less frequent visits. I have had plans for 15 years and I almost cancelled because of this location, I now go to Occee.

Just relocated to the area... went for the first time bcuz I had gotten my dog groomed next door at Petsmart... upon making the appointment, I received a text to receive the first visit free... upon arriving, there were several dogs loose that startled my pup...I was quite surprised at checkin when they asked for pymt up front b4 seeing the vet...I forgot about my coupon... wasn't happy with the lack of care from the vet... he didn't even introduce himself... didn't even act like a pet lover which I'm used to seeing from a vet...on my way home, I realized that I hadn't used the coupon...I called and asked if they could adjust my pymt... they replied that they would have to ask the mgr and would return my call...I waited all week to hear from them... called the following Monday and got the same response... girl calls me back and tells me that they can't do the adjustment bcuz a week had passed and accounting had been done...my dog needs surgery... why would I want to return to spend $500+ in a surgery? Who knows what other expenses they might want to add to the bill. Until I receive a credit, I will not return. Thank you, Sherrie

Dr Nuremberg is a rockstar and the staff is as well, literal angels to my pets. Thank you for the attention to detail and follow up and care you guys provide to my babies. With the current staff, I feel safe with my pets lives in their hands. I’ve been going here for 9 years with my 4 pets, and even when my one cat had to be euthanized elsewhere due to complex medical issues, they offered me different options to assist for affordability and they listened to my concerns. Thank you guys for all of the referrals to specialists and for all of your care!

Go somewhere else!!!! I scheduled an appointment almost a week in advance and took time off from work to take our new addition for their first vet appt. After waiting at the front desk for about 4 minutes without anyone greeting us, we finally got checked in. When they tried to take our dog and say since this is a drop off appt. we will call you when we are done. I corrected them and said no, it’s not a drop off, they checked to make sure I was not lying. When she saw I was correct, she had to go talk to the doc. To whom we have yet to even meet…..apparently the doctor was already at lunch and the only way to get my dog looked at was to leave him. We said no, we scheduled a regular appt. We were told there was nothing else that could be done even though I took time off work. What a waste of time!!!! They are not about the pets and treating them and helping them they are clearly about getting as many appointments as possible by doing all drop offs and racking in the money!!! I am glad the doctor got to eat, we wasted almost an hour and still do not have our dog taken care of. Would not suggest this vet. They may be reasonably priced, but you get what you pay for!!! Avoid this place!!! They do not care about anybody or anything except themselves and money!!!!!
