How to Save Money at P Street Pet Practice

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had a wonderful experience with this clinic and highly recommend them. When my dog pulled a muscle in their back leg, they understood the urgency and got us in on the exact same day. Fantastic service, a knowledgeable team, and a genuinely caring environment!

The best of the best! The entire team is always nothing less than phenomenal, but I have to mention my exceptional experience with Jose especially. Not only is he amazing at his job, he is always incredibly caring and thoughtful in his approach. He takes the time to listen and understand your pet entirely. I will never use another vet! Thank you to Dr.T and the amazing team at P St!

Simply amazing. My Dog has been going here since I adopted her 3.5 years ago and she is loved here as much as I love her. She actually loves to go here and the minute we pull up she strains at the leash to run up the stairs into the P Street an dgreets the staff as long lost friends. She runs up the stairs when I leave her there for her diagnostics and doesn't look back to see if I am there.. she is that crazy about her vet. Dr. tefari is amazing and he takes the time to explain her care to me.. and is patient even when I call at odd hours to ask inane questions. Truly appreciative Highly recommend P Street Pet Practice.

This was the first vet that I brought my cat to in D.C. The staff was nice, but the exam room was dirty — like, wipe the floor with a paper towel and comes up black. Maybe OK for dogs but didn’t feel great for an indoor cat. Found a new vet. Six years later they seem to have dug up my email address and started sending spam about some new vendor they’re working with, which reminded me that I should leave a review.

I had an excellent experience with P St. I was looking for dental cleaning services for my senior cat without breaking the bank. They were recommended via a Facebook group and exceeded my expectations. I contacted them to get prices for the dental. They require a pre dental consultation to assess your pet before scheduling the services. I was able to get the appointment within 2 days. I was able to schedule her cleaning within the same week and on a Saturday! The consultation cost about $79. The staff is very thorough in explaining the possible costs associated with the cleaning. On the day of I was able drop her off right at 830 when they opened. They perform the bloodwork the same day of the procedure. They will call if there are any issues. All cleanings are done in the morning and they watch your pet through the afternoon to see how they respond to the anesthesia. The total was about $729 with no extractions and included the bloodwork, cleaning and post op meds. Total cost was $810. I was very happy with the services and will definitely use them again. Bonus: One of my former elementary students is a Vet Tech there and it was so nice to see her doing well after all these years.
