How to Save Money at Friendship Hospital for Animals - Emergency & Specialty Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog has now had two surgeries with Dr. Adams there. She and her team are fantastic at their job and communicating with pet owners. I never have to wonder what stage of the procedure they're at, because I get a phone call promptly. Everyone here down to the staff is kind, friendly, and knowledgeable. And if they don't have the answers, they're willing to help you find them. Please be aware that their parking garage is VERY narrow and tight and I would not recommend it for large vehicles with a wide turning radius OR new/anxious drivers. It's not dangerous, just narrow. Thank you all for helping my boy be the healthiest version of himself!

I brought my 12-year-old dog in for a cardiology consultation with Dr. Chris McLaughlin, and it was genuinely one of the top three vet visits she has ever had. The entire team, including the interns, were incredibly caring and gentle with her — which means everything to me as a pet owner. How my dog is treated by her providers is something I take very seriously, and this team exceeded my expectations. Dr. McLaughlin took the time to thoroughly explain his findings, the reasoning behind his recommendations, and the progression of her condition. That level of transparency and patience is rare and deeply appreciated. If you are looking for a knowledgeable team that treats your pet with genuine kindness and care, I highly recommend this practice. Oskar

Dr. Woken and the incredible team who cared for Saki are amazing!!!! It is so stressful and emotional when our little fur babies are hurt. I wanted to take a moment to thank Dr.Woken and the team who show up daily for the genuine care and kindness you showed to my sweet Saki. Every interaction....every update...every gentle touch...every effort you made; let me know Saki was in the best possible hands. Thank you for the seeds of love you plant in animals and the people who love them. 🩷🐾 Jackie and Saki

My senior cat and I sought support from Friendship Animal Hospital starting in December of 2025. The staff is friendly, extremely supportive, and kind. They helped make the end of my little girl's life as painless and comfortable as possible. I really appreciate the follow ups they do after each visit and how willing they are to talk you through tough decisions. (I found Lacie's emails particularly meaningful.) I also appreciate how they prioritize emergency care (just like a human hospital, the most urgent cases are addressed first) and how quickly they get to each patient, even on the busiest of days. I miss my baby so much. I wish I could have had more years with her, but I am so thankful for the extra time this hospital gave us. We thought she would only last 4 weeks and we were blessed with 4 months. Highly recommend seeking care here.

This is a special review on Friendship Dermatology and I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to realize we haven’t left a review here. Dr. Darcy Kunder is honestly the reason our golden lives a happy delightful life and we couldn’t be more grateful to her for that. She took the time to experiment with therapies with our golden retriever who had been hospitalized with hot spots and had chronic ear infections. Our golden is a different dog now, all thanks to her. She also is one of the most caring doctors we’ve ever encountered. We drive over an hour to come here for her, and I have to say every experience we’ve had with the staff and with the general hospital have been incredible. We truly appreciate them. They are worth the drive from anywhere.
