How to Save Money at Friendship Hospital For Animals - Brandywine Location

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cat started experiencing seizures and our primary vet recommended Friendship for a neuro evaluation. Dr. Haley was absolutely fantastic. She was compassionate and I could tell she genuinely loves animals. She provided us with a great treatment plan as well! I also appreciate the transparency about pricing, which is higher than a typical vet but well worth the cost for the level of expertise and care received.

Dr. Wong was absolutely pivotal in Dante’s care, and we cannot thank her enough for everything she did for him and for our family! From the moment we walked into the clinic, she went above and beyond to make sure Dante received the best possible care. She is incredibly knowledgeable, thorough, and thoughtful, but what truly set her apart was the empathy and compassion she brough to our interaction. Navigating Dante’s health concerns was incredibly stressful, but Dr. Wong was patient, took the time to listen, explain things clearly, answer every question, and help us feel informed and supported throughout the process. She never made us feel rushed or dismissed, and it was clear that she genuinely cared about Dante (and his stressed out, emotional mom). Her expertise, responsiveness, and willingness to go the extra mile made such a meaningful difference in Dante’s care. If it wasn't for Dr. Wong, my 4-year-old dachshund may have ended up with permanent paralysis. When the Friendship neurologist was not on-site, she helped ease my anxiety and exhaustion by calling local surgical centers to get Dante seen ASAP. She was not only an exceptional veterinarian, but also a source of reassurance during a very difficult and emotional time. We feel incredibly fortunate that Dante had Dr. Wong advocating for him. Dr. Wong is truly an outstanding provider, and we are so grateful for her empathy, knowledge, and unwavering commitment to Dante. She went above and beyond in every sense of the word, and we cannot recommend her highly enough! P.s.- Dante is 1 week post-op and his motor function to his back legs has returned and he has full control of his bowel and bladder! If Dr. Wong wasn't such a strong advocate, I don't think we would be doing as great as we are...thank you!

We’ve taken many pets to Friendship. I consider them the strongest emergency and specialty hospital in our area and we are thankful for this practice. The vets are dedicated and smart. We’ve been working with Dr Bruhns in oncology. She is brilliant, unbelievably compassionate, and such a strong advocate. She has been such a gift. She is kind and she truly cares about our dog. I can’t say enough good things about her. I feel like working with her at Friendship is the reason our dog is here today. Thank you, Dr Bruhns. We are also very thankful for the surgical team who has treated two of our pets with compassion and skill. And finally, the emergency team saved our dog’s life 1.5 years ago when his red blood cell count was too low to count and he was dying in front of us as we sped to the hospital. They acted quickly and with intention - and he is alive and living a fully normal, happy, and healthy life now. If you have a complex case, I feel like this is a great hospital. They are people that like animals and they have tools and capabilities that many other vet practices do not have. I also really appreciate how they work to fit urgent cases in as quickly as possible. With a lot of medicine, this is the difference between life and death, and it means a lot that they work to see our pets as fast as possible. Our pets are family and we want to give them the best medical care. I feel that Friendship provides that.

I cannot recommend Friendship Hospital for Animals enough, specifically Dr. Folgueras and her incredible assistant, Maria. I moved to D.C. with two dogs and two cats, and I will openly admit that I am a very high-maintenance pet owner. Dr. Folgueras and Maria never once made me feel like I was asking too much. They are extremely skilled, patient, kind, and incredibly responsive. When we moved, my 14-year-old Labrador, Sam—who was my absolute soul animal—was blind, missing a toe, and on a complex regimen of medications. Dr. Folgueras stepped right in without hesitation, matching the high level of attentive care we were used to. I know with 100% certainty that if it wasn’t for Dr. Folgueras and her team, we would not have had our precious extra year with Sam. They are equally amazing with my two cats, making sure both get extra love and tailored care, especially my cat with chronic health issues. Veterinary medicine is one of the hardest jobs in the world, requiring staff to handle heartbreak and sadness daily. The entire team at Friendship Hospital handles it with ultimate grace. Thank you, Dr. Folgueras and Maria, for loving my animals as much as I do. Thank you to the entire staff for doing such a difficult, emotional job with so much grace.
