How to Save Money at District Veterinary Hospital - Navy Yard

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff here are magnificent and committed to keeping animals happy, calm, and healthy! We got an appointment right away, and my dog was taken care of and spoiled by our vet and techs! Dr. London spent all the time we needed D’yana and Taylor did an amazing job of distracting her with treats so she was calm during her shots. We’ve liked other vets, but my dog was always traumatized by the exam and shots. The team here are masters of gentle care. ♥️🐾💗

We came to District Vet during a stressful and logistically complex time — navigating international travel requirements for our dog Chance — and the team here made all the difference. From the very first visit, it was clear that this practice leads with one principle above all else: do no harm. Every interaction reflected a deep commitment to the animal's wellbeing, handled with patience, gentleness, and genuine care. I want to give a very special shout-out to Cole, who was nothing short of exceptional throughout this entire process. Professional, kind, efficient, and incredibly helpful — Cole made us feel truly cared for at every step. She is an exemplary employee and a real asset to this team. We are so grateful for the attentiveness and expertise shown by the entire District Vet staff. If you're looking for a vet practice where your pet is treated with the highest standard of care — and where the humans in the room are treated with warmth and respect too — this is it. Highly, highly recommend.

Dr. Hannah Warshawsky was so great! She took the time to explain everything very thoroughly and answered all of our questions with great detail. Our cat Peach had her best vet experience ever. No crying or meowing for the first time and she was so calm there. Very reasonable prices as well, especially for a DC Navy Yard business. We are very excited to have a top-notch vet option nearby and are so thankful for Dr. Warshawsky's excellent service.

We absolutely love this District Vet location, mainly because Dr. London is the best and the staff is so very kind and helpful. Dr. London is extremely knowledgeable, patient, collaborative, and fun to work with. She’ll explain everything you want to know about what’s going on with your fur baby, answering any and all questions, and she explains all possible treatment options very, very well. We always feel really taken care of and it’s overall such a good experience. Thanks to Dr. London and her team!!

The practice is the best and I have known the owner, Dr Teich, for 18yrs. from when he started at DCAC/now HRA I can get appts w/in the hr sometimes and I rush my kitties over to Dr Walker as she always has time for us at NY. She knows my kitties and I want continuity in care bec she can spot health changes immediately. We adore Dr Walker and she always treats my FURmily (and me) with the most genuine compassion. She knows me well and my idiosyncrasies and patient to my wishes.. Her support staff is lovely at NY as well. I have tried some of the new vets and they are very sweet to us. I have lots of senior special needs kitties with chronic illnesses and the team goes above and beyond to be kind to my FURmily. I have been owned by kitties for 65yrs and they agree District Vets is the best!!! We will never go anywhere else as long as Dr Walker is there.
