How to Save Money at Bond Vet - Cathedral Heights

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

After completing easy online appointment process, we had a great Saturday, 8:00AM introduction to our new neighborhood Vet Clinic! Welcoming, modern, attentive doctor and staff, and among the most thorough and informative assessment exams in my presence that I have had in my little dude’s 10 years! This includes a multi-page discharge summary in PDF, with guidance and instructions! We returned to Bond Vet later in the day to attend a Dog Mother’s Day event hosted by Woofbowl Food Truck for dogs. My dog and I were D-E-L-I-G-H-T-E-D! The moment I got home, I went on line and I joined Bond Vet as a member!

Dr. McIlwain very kindly agreed to see my dog through urgent care on her lunch break. She was able to do lab testing quickly, and she walked me through every step and option. We needed to transfer to an emergency vet, and she called ahead so they would know we were coming; she also sent me lab results to share with them as soon as I arrived. I am so grateful for her excellent level of care and commitment to helping my dog get the treatment he needed. Will absolutely be using Bond Vet in the future. Thank you so much!

It is difficult to put into words how grateful we are to the entire team at Bond Vet. Being able to get a same-day appointment on a Sunday was a tremendous relief at a time when every moment mattered. From the moment we arrived, every member of the staff treated Sherlock—and our family—with kindness, compassion, and respect. Dr. McIlwain never made us feel rushed. She took the time to carefully explain Sherlock's condition, answer all of our questions, and gently guide us through one of the hardest decisions a pet owner can ever face. Her empathy and professionalism brought us comfort during an incredibly painful day. Losing a beloved companion is heartbreaking, but knowing he was surrounded by such caring people made all the difference. We are deeply thankful for the exceptional care Sherlock received. Bond Vet is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone seeking compassionate, high-quality veterinary care.

I really don't like to leave negative reviews, but I feel others should know about my experience. My experience with this practice has been up and down. While my boy was being treated before I ultimately had to say goodbye to him, there were times when I questioned this place. However, our experience improved when working with Dr. Lawrence. Her compassion at the end of his life, along with the clinic's convenient location near my apartment, made me feel comfortable bringing my other two cats there. A few weeks ago, I went into the clinic in person to schedule appointments for my two cats. While making the appointments, the receptionist that day acknowledged that I had been there just over two months earlier to say goodbye to my other cat, whom the clinic had treated. He told me, face-to-face, that he could apply a credit to waive the new-patient fee for one of my girls as a gesture of kindness, given what I had recently gone through. Earlier this week, that same receptionist called to tell me that my Thursday appointments had to be moved to Friday because of a "doctor emergency" that required the clinic to close. At no point during that call, or at any time before my appointment, did anyone tell me that the credit I had been promised would not be honored. When I arrived this morning, after paying for a car service because the air quality was dangerously poor and I didn't want to expose my cats during what otherwise would have been a walk, I was informed by today's receptionist that they couldn't honor what I had been told. Not only was the promised credit no longer being honored, but the story of what I had been told had also changed. Instead, I was offered only a much smaller credit. The issue isn't simply the money. It's that I was told one thing in person, relied on that information, and then was blindsided at check-in without so much as a courtesy phone call beforehand. If someone on the staff made a mistake, the professional thing to do would have been to contact me before my appointment and not wait until I arrived with my pets. What made the experience even more disappointing was the complete lack of empathy from both the receptionist working today and Dr. McIlwaine. After losing my boy, I expected at least a little compassion. Instead, I left feeling so misled. In the end, I walked out and will be taking my girls elsewhere. So, based on my experience, I cannot recommend this practice. If clear communication, honesty, and compassionate customer service are important to you, you should look elsewhere.

BondVet Cathedral Heights is absolutely the best! Everyone I have met there has been caring and a pleasure to work when I bring Nala in. A special shout out to Dr. L who was so attentive and helpful when my Nala was sick over the holidays. She was very thorough in diagnosing the issue and she really made us feel valued and cared for. Also, Sam is always so awesome when I call and visit the office.
