How to Save Money at Hartford Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Who knew how important having a vet with weekend hours would be...this team did an amazing job with my gal Sherry for a weekend emergency visit and i'm SO glad I brought her here. She ended up needing extensive care for a handful of days, but made a great recovery thanks to thorough continued care. We will also be moving our other kitty's care here since I know she will be in good hands. Thank you all!! Bonus points for actual humans picking up the phone when you call.

Dr. Alexander was absolutely wonderful. I brought my dog for an urgent care appointment. When I walked in there was nobody to greet me, but that was because I could see the whole staff busy tending to pets. Instead of complaining, I chose grace because all pets matter, not just mine. After just a few minutes, a nurse greeted me and began taking vitals on my dog. She became a little alarmed, so she quickly got the doctor. The doctor let me know that she was in the middle of a very sensitive appointment with a cat, but she needed to traige my dog to determine how critical his illness was. She told me that my dog was stable and would be OK until she returned. She had a nurse stay nearby until she was free and able to do a complete exam and treat my dog. I would give her 10 stars if I could. I hope she does not choose another profession because she seems to care about all the pets she sees, not just the ones with super critical owners.

Million stars for Dr. Coy, Crystal and the vet tech. I called on Saturday afternoon with an emergent situation for my rescue 13 year old cat Charlie. His back legs gave up and he wasn't able to jump. I was greeted on the phone by Crystal who was extremely nice and went out of her way to successfully accommodate my visit couple hours before closing. Dr. Coy ( extremely pleasant and professional) explained every possible scenario/condition and the testing she recommended with prioritizing the most important ones. Sure enough, the blood work she recommended first, confirmed the diagnosis of diabetes and the reason for Charlie's poor mobility. She proceeded with options of the possible treatments with such honesty and understanding to our situation. Her compassion and support for my decisions are beyond any measures. On top of that, Dr. Coy texted me very next day to check up on Charlie. We are so lucky and blessed to be under such an amazing care and in such loving hands. Thank you so much Dr. Coy and your Staff. I hope, all the good comes back to you! Love on first visit 😊 Charlie and Renata

Doc Coy is my new vet. I’ve brought 4 of my cats to her. She explains the situation, lets you know what your choices are, lets you know what it will cost and then proceeds from there. The staff are nice. The place is clean.

Wish I had found them sooner! 🥹 I had to put down my dog of 17 years this March, and the vet, vet tech were incredibly compassionate throughout the entire process. They gave us all the time we needed in the room and gently walked us through every step. You could tell they truly cared and were empathetic to what we were going through. We chose to have my dog cremated and received a copy of her paw print. A week later, the vet sent us a handwritten card, which was such a thoughtful gesture. I’m so grateful I found them, and if we ever decide to get another dog in the future, we will absolutely return here.
