How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Love this place so much , I’ve been to other locations as well ! This is by far my favorite location the staff is so nice and welcoming ! Truly care and love our fur babies , all questions I had regarding my new puppy were answered and explained ❤️ ! They gave my sweet boy a nice sanitary hair cut for his bum which I was so grateful for , shots were so easy he didn’t feel a thing . Thank you guys for caring for Bear 🐻!

I don’t understand how this place still has service. They are so terrible. The people are not professional. I took my cat in to get help because he was LETHARGIC!!! They said oh we couldn’t get a urine test we couldn’t get a blood test because he was being too “agressive” my kitty barely had energy much less being agressive he didn’t want to MOVE! So I paid $400 to get sent home with an upset baby kitty and passed away the same day. I can’t even imagine what he had to go through knowing nobody wanted to help him. This place is absolutely terrible and they had no empathy. No consideration and plain rude to the situation and I was TOO NICE!! These people don’t care about your animals they only care about getting paid for lolly gaggin in the back! Take this joke of a place down already.

We started using Banfield this year and every time we have a great experience. The staff are professional and courteous. We had one of our dogs showing bad health signs and the staff were able to ease our fears and anxiety by just handling us with care. I recommend that everyone sign up for the membership plan.

Doctor and staff helping her barely have enough time to examine my cat let alone talk to or allow me to ask questions. My understanding from staff is that Pets Smart cut the amount of time spent with pets which id VERY 😡 UPSETTING since it was not that way before. Probably will find a vet who will.

(Sorry this is long, I am just so happily in shock!) Best vet I have ever been to!!! My girl cat, Sesame, is the craziest when she's at the vet. She's very loud, she hisses, she's wiggly, and she scratches. Pre-visit meds do not work on her. Everytime I have gone to the vet with her for the past few years, she hisses and yells when the vet comes near. She usually does not get a thorough physical exam because of this, the vaccines are usually hard for the vet staff to administer. At home, I have to wrap her up in a blanket just to brush her teeth and do her nails, bribes and fear-free techniques have not worked on her. As soon as we stepped foot in this hospital, she stopped yowling (car rides are also very overstimulating for her, so she'll be noisy all the way there). I love that this Banfield is a stand alone, making it less stressful for pets. It's also only ten minutes from our house. I went on a Sunday (just yesterday) so everything would be quiet, too. The lady at the front desk welcomed us right away and was so friendly and inviting. Our vet tech was Jasmine, who was very friendly and accommodating and a fellow cat lady herself! She made sure we were getting everything we needed to and prepared well for my anticipatingly fractious cat (we would only bring her out when the vet came in to reduce stress). Shockingly, my cat became the best patient she could be! Dr. Vandish was a cat lady herself and was so incredibly nice to both us and my cats. My girl cat let her touch her, pick her up, and thoroughly examine her! That was so unheard of, she had not once behaved well at any vet in the past years. She'd either be hissing, yelling, and/or scratching up people's arms! I am still in shock! I imagine Dr. Vandish's energy was communicated to my girl, she was such a warm and bubbly person. They also fed her Churu treats (which of course she never ever eats at home nor eats much of anything at all) and she downed like four of them instantly. Lastly, she wandered the room like nothing was amiss and never in her life have I seen that at a vet. I'm sure she got possessed that day, I will never forget this. I also brought in my boy cat, Toast, along to get an exam and estimate for a tooth issue, which he did well on. He's always a scaredy cat at the vet and loves to hide. He loves Churu at home, but is always always too anxious to ever eat at the vet. Also unexpectedly, he ate quite a bit here, too! The vet was very patient with him. I will definitely be going to here forever!!! The building is nice and clean and the prices are actually very fair, I don't feel as though I'm being cheated into anything. Dr. Vandish and Jasmine are now my absolute favorites, as they handled this situation so well and my kitties felt so incredibly safe with them. If I could give more than five stars, I would!!! The energy of this hospital's staff is amazing.
