How to Save Money at Myrtle Avenue Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We've been taking our cats to Myrtle Avenue Vet for over 30 years, and they have always received excellent care. When we have had the need for an urgent visit, they've gone out of their way to fit us in. The day that I write this review, they worked our cat, Tucker, in for an urgent visit to remove grass caught in his throat. Through the years everyone, from the front office staff to the vet techs to the doctors, have always been kind, friendly, and and appropriately concerned about the welfare of the cats we have been lucky to have in our family over the years. I highly recommend MAV to anyone searching for a veterinary hospital for their furry family members.

Id like to take a moment to sincerely apologize to myrtle avenue veterinary hospital for the review that I wrote. It was meant to be for the Healing spirit and wellness center that is also located on myrtle avenue NOT to be confused with myrtle avenue veterinary because the address is similar. I didn't want anyone to feel disrespected or any kind of way as I appreciate all they have done for me and my "Little Red". My dog means the world to me, and I thank myrtle avenue vet for being so gentle and kind while we are going through this horrible time. Thank you for your service and generosity.

I came in for a Foxtail removal. Everybody was so friendly. Having just relocated to the area on a work assignment, I hadn’t had time to establish temporary vetcare. The girls at the front desk were welcoming and professional. They got me in incredibly quickly, and doctor Tatro was so professional, friendly and knowledgeable. She not only helped me with the Foxtail removal, but she gave me insight to another condition that I had been managing and give me insight for my boxer. And When I picked my dog up? She had her tail up and bounded out, so I know she was in good hands when she was in their care and she felt comfortable.

They always treat my babies with extreme care. They saved my one dog’s life once and even for a very reasonable price after she was attacked by a larger dog at the dog park. I would 10/10 recommend this vet to any person in humboldt looking for a vet.

Horrible vet. Walked out on 2 different occasions, this being the 2nd. Lack of communication. Gave patient the wrong amount of narcotic painkillers and didn't communicate/mark that. In house medication administration is ALWAYS done from hospital/on-site inventory, NOT GIVEN FROM PATIENT'S PRESCRIPTION SEND-HOME BOTTLES! I thought my child whom is always sneaking around the house had gotten into the serious ones. You can imagine the problem & morning wasted over this endeavor of trying to find the missing serious pills. All to find out the off-the-boat vet didn't communicate she administered meds from my dogs bottles that were filled for his "Take-Home", in hindsight yes sure I suppose my overly curious kid isn't to blame.. it's the children at the front desk & that vill this clinic. All young college girls. Where are the men? Vet herself is very standoffish towards men too. She likes to stare and not speak. Like the client is the Vet? Kinda an odd gal until you make her feel comfortable.. strange. Clearly traumatized in a past life and shouldn't be running a business. Doc is okay at her job, at best. SUNNY BRAE IS WHERE YOU GO IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR PET! Sunny Brae Sunny Brae Sunny Brae. Trust me. From life threatening urgent surgeries, anti-venom, even normal little stuff.. SUNNYYYY BRAEEEE ALLLL THEEE WAYYYY!!!!!
