How to Save Money at Irvin Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Irvin is wonderful! She has taken amazing care of my animals and is really great with them. She’s done house calls for my horses too which has been so helpful! Definitely recommend

We had a very difficult experience with this clinic and feel it’s important to share for others. First, I do want to acknowledge that Lacey and Ivy have always been kind and helpful, and we appreciate their efforts and care they have always shown towards all of our animals. This review is not directed at them personally. Our dog was treated here for approximately two months for a suspected rare condition without confirmatory diagnostics. During that time, her condition continued to decline, including weight loss, gastrointestinal issues, and worsening symptoms once starting medications, that we repeatedly reported. As her condition worsened, we sent a detailed, professional, and respectful email outlining our concerns and requesting further diagnostics. That communication was later described as “condescending,” and rude which was surprising, shocking even, given that it was simply an attempt to advocate for our dog’s care requesting testing be done. We are happy to share that communication if requested, as transparency matters when situations like this occur. An appointment was scheduled for further evaluation. We drove over an hour to the clinic and followed all instructions, including withholding food and water in preparation. Upon arrival, we were informed by Josie (she met our volunteer outside) that care would be refused based on that prior communication, that email. This was extremely concerning given that our dog was actively declining. We immediately sought care at another veterinary clinic the same day. She was found to be in critical condition with a severe bacterial infection and, tragically, had to be euthanized. While we understand that not all cases can be saved, situations involving declining patients require timely diagnostics, open communication, and continuity of care. Pet owners should never feel discouraged from asking questions or requesting further evaluation when their animal is not improving. Proper diagnostics could have possibly saved Bonnies life. We hope this review encourages careful listening, thorough reassessment, and a consistent focus on patient care in future cases. As someone with many years of hands-on experience in animal welfare, I strongly encourage pet owners not to rely on assumed diagnoses (what some call guess work) when their animal is not improving. When symptoms continue or worsen, appropriate diagnostics and reassessment are critical. A good veterinarian should be open to listening, especially when a patient is declining, suffering, and concerns are being raised. Clear communication and a willingness to reassess can make a significant difference in outcomes, it can mean life or death. Please advocate for your animals, ask questions...Request diagnostics. If something does not feel right, seek a second opinion if needed, if your vet wont listen to you. It can make all the difference. Rest In Peace Bonnie, We Love You & Will Miss Your Sweet Face.

First appointment today with my two 7 month old kittens who each had an eye problem and now I will not be going anywhere else! Starting with Hannah who answered the phone to the vet tech to Dr. Irvin everyone was fantastic! First nice surprise was Hannah offering to take the carrier (it was heavy!) to the exam room after I checked in. Second nice surprise was when the vet tech came in she had a treat for the kittens to help them feel comfortable about coming out of the carrier - not just reaching in and pulling them out. Love it! Found everyone to be very knowledgeable and helpful. Dr. Irvin took her time to address all my concerns and to explain everything. I also asked her about flea treatment and she was nice enough to go ahead and give it to the kittens while I was there - never felt like I was keeping her or being rushed. Mega thanks to everybody! If you're looking for a vet, you can't go wrong with Dr. Josie Irvin!
