Good insurance for older pets
When I first got my dog, we were with another insurance company and it was a hassle in terms of getting claims to them and even more so for reimbursement. We switched to Healthy Paws in 2013, and they have been really amazing. Great customer service reps and an easy to use app and website, can upload invoices from your phone and quick to reimburse. The no lifetime limit is also a big one for me, as my dog is older and I don't want to be stressing about vet bills if it means saving his life or making him more comfortable. He's recently had fairly major surgery for a dog his age and knowing that we reached our deductible and will be covered at 70% took much of the financial strain off my plate.

Jury's Out
Great marketing gets you in the door. But dealing with claims people feels like insurance. Sample FIGO communication regarding our dog's ortho waiver: "Thank you for providing this information. We have received [your dog's] completed orthopedic waiver form with the exam performed on 08/20/2021. This has been reviewed and applied to his policy. The 6-month waiting period has now been waived for the orthopedic conditions that were assessed during the 08/20/2021 exam and do not show any clinical signs or symptoms. The left front limb is excluded based on the waiver and medical records received from [your dog's] veterinarian. The waiver and medical records show outside palpation and a recommendation for radiographs. Until a further orthopedic exam and diagnostics can be run, these conditions may not be eligible for coverage as they were noted to be abnormal on the waiver and medical records. To clarify, the orthopedic waiver is not a guarantee of coverage." All that because our vet's exam notes indicated: "Outside palpation - looks OK. If further test needed recommend x-ray." The waiver form doesn't require an x-ray. And the vet's note just indicated the limits of his exam (palpation). Seems clear to me. But it wasn't to the FIGO "claims support team." So, after incurring the expense of a vet exam to get FIGO's ortho waiver form signed, we decided to just wait out the 6 month ortho exclusion period rather than jump through more hoops (and incur more expense) for the FIGO claims support team. We haven't made any claims under our policy (which we have renewed for a second year), and hopefully, we won't need to. But, based on the ortho waiver experience, I wouldn't be surprised if there are more hoops to jump through. Bottom line: Don't be fooled by the touchy feely marketing. It's insurance. So, read your policy carefully and expect FIGO claims to assert all available coverage defenses in the event of a claim.
