When I got Romeo as a puppy I put off buying insurance which was a mistake. I had to take him to the emergency vet clinic twice and their prices are exorborant! I finally got the insurance and was glad when Romeo suddenly had high liver enzymes. It took a needle biospy and a surgical biospy to find out what the problem was. Both of which were pretty expensive. I was pleasantly surprised when VPI paid approximately 90% of the cost. Romeo is doing well now on a special diet but I don't know how I would have afforded the vet bills without VPI.
