I had good experiences with Trupanion, until they tried to raise my rates. They advertise "no increases due to pet's age/claim history". HOWEVER, they have raised my rates by almost 100% over the last 2 years. When I signed up my first pet, I was paying $38/month.....1 year later, they raised it to $50/month. Today I received a letter saying they now want $65/month. I never even made a claim for this dog! With 2 dogs, that gets quite expensive, especially considering they dont cover dental, and even less is covered if your dog isnt neutered by age 1. (For example, if you get your dog neutered ANY time after they turn 1, and they get hit by a car, they wont cover it! What does neutering have to do with getting hit by a car?)
Their reasoning for raising the rates is: "costs of veterinary care in your area went up this year"....funny, considering my vet lowered their fees this year.

Needless to say, I cancelled my policy today. I would rather keep the $1500/year in my bank account, rather than give it to this greedy business.

2/10 because of their friendly customer support. Otherwise it would be a ZERO.

Stuart, I agree with you that veterinary costs have remained fairly flat. However, technology and procedures have greatly advanced (TPLO surgery for example) and the usage of these procedures as well as visiting veterinary specialists is becoming more mainstream. Our latest premiums are updated based on the average pet of your situation (breed, age at enrollment, and geographical location). We did not arbitrarily increase premiums, but based these adjustments on the average pet for your situation and our claims experiences.
We still do not increase premiums due to aging, and your updated premiums are based on the age at which you enrolled your pet (so if you were to get a quote for your pet's current age, you would notice that it costs more).
I hope this makes sense and please give us a call if you'd like to talk more about pricing.

I disagree with Stacy at Trupanion. You don't have to increase your premiums due to aging because you've creativly raised your prices by attributing that to advancements in technology and other procedures. If that is the case, you need to stop telling people their prices will not rise. We care about the bottom line when it comes to pricing. What you have done does not pass the smell test. My dog is now 4 years old. I have filed no claims on my policy that I've held for the past two years and now my policy is going from $38.00/mo. to over $70 per month. This is an increase of almost 50%. That is insane!!
