I've had VPI coverage for 2 golden retrievers who died of cancer. One golden had coverage from age 5 to 11, the other only for 1 year (he was a rescue at age 8). Without VPI and also their double cancer coverage, I would not have been able to get all the testing necessary to know exactly what we were dealing with and to get the treatment I was willing to try. Peace of mind knowing I did the best I could is well worth the premiums. I also have a terrier who is very healthy and I rarely need to use VPI. Again, peace of mind is worth the cost of premiums. I also have the wellness rider for each dog and sometimes my refund is more than the premium, depending on what's done that year. The customer service is always helpful and refund payments don't take long.
