I am a veterinarian - well seasoned with over 30 years of experience - and I have pet insurance. Why? Because I can't do everything. Last month my bulldog Vanna needed extensive oral care. She needed a partial manibulectomy for an oral mass and had fractured both upper forth premolars. Poor girl was not happy. But after a visit to my favorite dental specialist (and I don't get a professional discount) we were both much happier. The bill was about $1400. After placing my claim ( best to have your vet help you with the lingo - I did it on my own though) I received almost $1000 back. My other bulldog, Dozer, has been insured by VPI since I got him 5 years ago as a 3 year old rescue. Knock on wood he has been healthy except for a minor eye problem that I treated and didn't claim. I hope I never have to use VPI's services with him but I will keep him insured just in case! I recommend health insurance for all my client and their pets. It is too bad that so many ignore my suggestion and then are sorry later on.
