I first heard about pet insurance in mid 1980's when we had a poodle that was ill with heart problems and died at 15. It would have been nice to have had insurance to help with the expenses. I vowed that we would next pet. So in 1990 when we got our second poodle we followed up with VPI at the 6-month first eligible date for purchase. In 1995, insurance was so helpful when epilepsy was diagnosed. With insurance to assist us, we had another 6 years with our poodle. We also got a second pet during this period, a dachshund who at one year got run over. Without the insurance we could not have afforded the care required. We had him for 11 years. We now have a small terrier/chihuaua who is 9 years. In our experience, the VPI insurance has always been a positive investment. It is like any other insurance -- it may not pay the whole but it does make the crisis a lot easier. We opted for the major medical (highest level and most expensive) but it has already repaid us as we just had minor surgery done. When we get another pet, we will choose VPI again. We always recommend to any pet "parents" for secure care.
