I purchased my dog's health insurance plan right after I bought her. I found VPI through my vet's puppy information packet which I received with my dog's first visit. I think it's a great idea to have pet insurance, but I suppose I should have done shopping around before I settled on VPI. They may the nation's largest pet insurer, but I'm absolutely positive that they can't be the best! I bought their superior plan with a wellness rider thinking that it would cover much of my puppy's first year's bills (vaccinations, spaying, etc.). Was I ever disappointed and mislead! I payed $431 for spaying (including pre-surgical bloodwork, anesthesia, spaying, micro-chip, overnight stay, etc.) and had to wait almost 2 months to receive a check for $70! This company is very slow to process claims and does not reimburse the amount you're expecting. Be very leary!
