I've had PetPlan insurance for my miniature dachshund for several years now. After a major health scare that wound up OK, but could have been much worse, I decided that worrying about money in the midst of crises like these is the worst feeling in the world. After seeing how PetPlan doesn't discriminate for most conditions, I chose them.
Glad I did! Every time I've made a claim it's processed in a reasonable amount of time, and I've never once had to argue with them about coverage or discovered shady fine print that I felt tricked over.
Most recently we've been dealing with a very scary diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease and they've continued to be great.
The only downside is that you have to be able to front everything up front. So if you don't have $5,000 to cover the emergency surgery, this won't help. PetPlan makes all of this very clear, just an FYI. Also, there have been a few instances where their math has been incorrect and I've had to bring some errors to their attention. In all cases, they acknowledged their mistake and made it right.
So if fronting the necessary funds isn't an issue and you're comfortable paying some sizable funds as your dog gets older, I definitely recommend PetPlan.
