We insured our Staffordshire Bull Terrier with Petplan right after we adopted her about four years ago. During that time, she had two major medical issues: TPLO surgery shortly after we got her, and recently an amputation associated with osteosarcoma. In both cases, Petplan was great.
First, both claims were processed quickly and accurately based on the terms of our policy. For example, the payments we received for the osteosarcoma claim came within $86 of what I calculated (which is incredible, because we submitted almost $6,000 in bills). The bulk of this claim was paid within a couple weeks of our submitting it. We live in the SF Bay Area where everything is very expensive, and without good insurance, our financials could have taken a sizable hit.
Unfortunately, Ruby didn't have the strength to pull through, and we ended up having to put her to sleep in April. Our family was crushed. But this brings me to the second thing I love about Petplan: their amazing customer service. Every person I've spoken with in the last four years, both while Ruby was sick and after she'd passed away, was fantastic. Their compassion, empathy, and assistance in navigating the claims process were a huge comfort at a time when we were all emotionally wrecked. It felt like I had an advocate helping me get through it, rather than an adversary I had to negotiate with.
Insurance companies are for-profit businesses, but honestly, in my experience, it's never felt that way with Petplan. Thei
