I started covering Penny, my black lab mix, at the age of 5 at the insistence of my daughter. She kept insisting that labs have a tendency to contract cancer at a relatively young age. Thank goodness I took her advice! In Feb 2011, Penny was diagnosed with "a lump on her spleen". This lump had ruptured and she needed immediate surgery. There was no gaurantee it was cancer, as a biopsy had not been completed. We had the surgery to remove the spleen and stop the bleeding. The cost upwards of $6,000. Penny recovered from the sugery quickly, but we still had not received the biopsy results when she started acting lethargic five days later. We returned to the hosptial and they indicated she had started bleeding again. We had to make a decision immediately as the bleeding would be fatal. Since we still had not received the biopsy results, we had to put her through a second surgery. Unfortunately she never made it back home. The additional costs were another $6,000. Thanks to PetPlan I received almost 90% back. It is tough trying to get over the loss of a loved one like Penny. Money doesn't ease the pain, but at least it wasn't also a financial burden. It was a pleasure dealing with the representatives of PetPlan, and all questions were answered quickly and to our satisfaction.
