Our 6 year old long-haired German Shepherd Belgarion was having difficulty swallowing and was foaming at the mouth one morning so I rushed him to our vet and then onto the emergency vet surgery. He was diagnosed with an abscessed salivery gland and scheduled for surgery the next day. After some ups and downs [his throat swelled shut and they had to perform an emergency tracheotomy and a few days later his chest started to swell up due to emphysema], he was allowed home after 9 days in critical care and then he had to go in again for follow up surgery when his chest started to swell up again. Finally, after over 2 weeks of sleepless nights and worry, he started on the road to recovery. We called him Frankendog as the vets had shaved off his chest plumage and he had 2 scars either side of his throat, one going all the way down to his sternum. He now has a 2 inch stubble and you can't see the scars at all. Best of all he is back to his goofy self again. We didn't even think of the insurance factor until he was well on the way to recovery but luckily PetPlan allow up to 90 days to make a claim. The cost of the surgeries and the many overnight stays was over $14,000! However the forms were very easy to fill out and we received our check within a week of sending the claim. Both our dogs are on PetPlan and will remain so along with any other pets we get in the future.
