The Netflix of Pet Insurance Companies

I signed up for Trupanion last year. At the time they were just pushing through a massive rate increase to certain customers, yet they were still offering me a decent rate. I asked them about that and they assured me that this was an unusual occurrence and that only certain outliers were affected.
Now one year later it is me getting the 50+% rate increase for no apparent reason other than the desire to soak their customers and line their own pockets. Bye bye.

BTW, even before they did this I was considering switching. One of my cats had a upper respiratory infection when she was a kitten, not at all uncommon for kittens. She got some meds, and a week later got a clean bill of health. 6 months later she had a re-occurance, and Trupanion told me that all future such claims would be denied, because it was a "pre-existing condition". Really? A viral infection? Oh well, glad I'm switching to a more legit insurer. I'd urge others to do the same.

We are currently in the process of bringing premiums up to date, some of which had not been updated in nearly 4 years. As we gather more claims data, we can more accurately determine the average cost of "your pet" based on all like pets of your situation including breed, age at enrollment, chosen deductible, and geographical location. We are the only pet insurance provider to offer 90% coverage and no limits whatsoever so we must adjust premiums based on the average cost of your pet in order to keep offering such liberal coverage. On average, we pay out about 70 cents (versus the industry average of 50-55 cents) in claims for every dollar received in premiums so when you see an increase to your premium, it is a sign that the average pet like yours is receiving more health care. To learn more about our pricing, visit: http://trupanion.com/why-trupanion/value
For the case of the respiratory condition, our policy does not extend coverage for illnesses for which evidence and/or symptoms of their potential manifestation already exist during the 18 months prior to the policy enrollment date. However, this is certainly an issue you could pursue with our claims appeal process. I encourage you to give your claims adjuster a call to learn more.

Yes, and I'm sure next year you will have an equally good reason for another huge increase, and the year after, and the year after that. No thanks, I've learned my lesson. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
Also, one would hope that common sense would occasionally dictate actions regarding the whole "pre-existing condition" thing. For example:

1. I continue to pay premiums and my cat gets another viral infection 3 years from now. According to you guys, this would no longer be covered.

2. I discontinue paying premiums for 2 years, then re-sign up. Then she gets another viral infection a year later, THAT apparently would be covered.

Makes no sense at all, and again your policies have a strange way of working against your long standing customers.
