Giant Raise in Rates - No Notification

I've had this insurance for a few years and they've always been good about paying out claims except one time where I had to hound them for a month and half. They are always very friendly on the phone. But today I noticed they took out an extra $20 on my account and when I called them up they raised the rate on one of my pets and I did not receive any notice.
Apparently I 'rolled in' to a new policy which includes 10 new experimental medical treatments.

I had no choice on whether I wanted to roll in to this or not, I didn't even know it was occurring.

The rate that went up was only on 1 pet, the rate increase for my second dog will surely be coming up and I expect that to be double what this jump was because they said it's based on the age of the pet at enrollment.

I really had good things to say about this company, but they lost all of that goodwill today. No choices, no notifications, just almost a doubling of a rate.

We send email notifications at least 30 days prior to your anniversary date to inform you of an upcoming rate change. You do have the option to increase your deductible to lower your monthly premium. You should file a complaint with your state's department of insurance. There is a legal requirement for an insurer to notify the customer of any changes to the policy or rates. I don't have Trupanion, but my pet insurance company did something similar to me years ago and I filed a complaint with my state's department of insurance and the pet insurance company continued to provide me with the same policy and premium. It's a shame it had to come to that, but that's the way it is these days with insurance companyies.
