Why policy cancelled.

We originally were referred to Pet First through my spouses work Scripps Clinic. We switched to Petfirst because the benefits appeared to be better than VPI and the premium was lower. After only being insured with Petfirst a year, we cancelled our policy for our dog because of our recent experience. Reason 1. Our policy was not automatically renewed, it was canceled without any written notice. 2. When I called about my dogs policy the person who we spoke to said he would check on status of our policy with the billing department, because we should have gotten notice. I don't believe he ever verified if our policy should have been renewed. We were told we would have to restart a new policy for our dog. Then when got treatment for his medical condition, the claims were denied based on pre existing medical condition. Which is absurd because pet first already knew about his condition when our policy was in force the previous year! Pet first let our policy lapse with no written notice and then denies claims. Had they automatically renewed our policy or given us notice that our dogs policy was about to expire this wouldn't have been an issue. Pet first is the first insurance company I know of that does not either automatically renew your policy until and insured notifies them to cancel it and/or sends an insured written notice that a policies about to expire. My wife is going to give negative feedback to Scripps about Petfirst since they recommended us to Petfirst and I am thinking about filing a complaint with the California department of insurance.
