Be VERY careful when you shop for insurance. We had VPI for several years for our dogs...until a major incident over a month ago. One of our dogs choked on a foreign object and needed after-hours emergency surgery at about $2000. VPI would only cover the removal and NOT the after hours charges. Finally got the rep to admit that if ONLY our dog had choked an hour earlier, there would be no problem! WHAAAAAT? They did not cover this accident. We shopped around and asked how other insurance companies would handle this situation. Healthy Paws (at #1) said it would be classified as an accident and would be covered. So now we are with Healthy Paws. Our vet said she had a similar problem with VPI and dumped them; she said she cannot in good faith recommend VPI anymore. Healthy Paws doesn't cover everything; that's where a savings account comes in handy. We regularly put money in for our dogs.
