On July 31, my dachshund, Bo, turned 7 years old. Unfortunately, on that day, when I came home from visiting my husband in the hospital after his own surgery, I found Bo shaking with pain and barely able to walk. I knew right away, given the tendency of the breed to have back issues, that Bo needed to be seen right away. I rushed him to the 24 hour vet hospital in our area, where he was evaluated and admitted. The next day, an MRI revealed a severe herniated disc. Without surgery, more than likely, Bo would be paralyzed from the neck down. The cost? $6,800! But knowing how much we love our dog, combined with the reassurance that we had pet insurance for Bo (as well as for all of our pets), there was no question. Surgery was performed that morning. Bo came home after 4 days in the hospital and was kept on strict crate rest for 5 weeks. Little by little, he improved. Yesterday, the neurosurgeon released Bo from crate rest. While he's still a little wobbly, he will continue to heal. The surgeon told my husband that by agreeing to the surgery, "we saved Bo's life". Thank goodness for PetPlan. We have a bronze plan and after we submitted the bill and the medical records, PetPlan quickly responded and reimbursed us for 90% of the surgery, minus our deductible. Bo's injury occurred the week before our daughter's first college tuition payment was due. What a relief it was to know that we could take care of our dog and not face the financial strain the surgery surely would have caused had we not been insured. I can't say enough good things about PetPlan. I highly recommend them and am forever grateful for assistance.
