A few years ago, my standard poodle suffered bloat (gastric torsion) and needed immediate and expensive surgery without which he would die within 24 hours. I had no hesitation in agreeing to the surgery since he was covered by Petplan. They quickly reimbursed me for the $3200 bill.
Last year, my 3 year old Lab ripped her left ACL. In order to prevent lifelong limping and pain, I wanted the best orthopedic specialist and the best procedure available. The cost was $4000. No need to consider my finances since I knew Petplan would cover it.
Unfortunately, dogs who rip one ACL have a tendency to rip the other one which happened 3 weeks ago to my Lab. I went back to the same surgeon who performed the same surgery on her other leg. We immediately filed a claim to Petplan on July 28 and I got the check last week before my visa bill even came through!
Besides the obvious financial advantage to Petplan, I feel the best thing about it is that you don't have to have an argument or discussion in your family if you can afford what your dog needs. You just make the decision based on the best interest of you pet with the confidence that Petplan will cover it and you will be quickly reimbursed. You would think they would want to drop me after all that my pets have cost them in the past few years but they have been great. As a professional dog trainer, I recommend them to clients so that they can always do what's best for their dogs without worrying about finances.
