I fully take responsibility for not doing as much research as I should have before signing up with VPI. They aren't a horrible company, but I haven't been thrilled with their service. I have two rescue dogs, ages 4 and 1 1/2. When I got my first dog and signed up for insurance, I put down some things he was being treated for after his first vet visit. He was in good health, but had a small eye infection and some stomach distress. This is very a normal for a dog that has just been pulled from a shelter. VPI immediately listed these as pre-existing conditions and wrote them out of our policy for coverage. I should have known right then that this wasn't a company that actually cared about your pets. I realize how naive it was to think that they might, but I was optimistic. I have only had to submit one claim, for an x-ray and visit after my dog ate a piece of a pie tin. I got approximately 50% back for a reimbursement which I expected since I hadn't met my deductible yet. It wasn't a bad experience overall, and I was pleased with the processing speed of my reimbursement and the amount. The thing that really bothers me about VPI and that i don't feel they are upfront about, is the crazy price increases every year of your dogs life. I started out around $25 a month for my first dog and we are now up to $37.50. This is getting ridiculous, and I won't be able to afford this much longer.
