I find petplan to be pretty reasonable. The trick is to get them in when they are young. People complain pet insurance is a "rip off", but how often do you use your car insurance? Hardly. But we pay into it every month, don't we?
Petplan is the best of the pet insurances because of what they cover. VPI - rip off. They don't pay for anything except a small amount of vaccines, which are $10 anyway..
I'll tell you something, I don't notice the $35/month out of my bank account, but when I get a check for hundreds of dollars, I notice it. So does my credit card after taking a hit for vet bills. It has more than paid for itself over the years. Sure, I could have set up a savings account for that stuff but for most people, it wouldn't be something we would keep up with.
I have gotten checks for constipation, bloodwork, diabetes visits and hopefully some dental stuff soon! Dental is a gray area in pet insurance.
The best candidates for petplan are those with animals that tend to get into accidents, medications or chronic illness. My kitty developed diabetes and I have never had an issue with getting reimbursed. Every month when I pay for new syringes, I am reimbursed 90% no problem. In my mind, that cuts down my premium a bit. It's nice to get him the most treatment I can because I know it will be covered.
