My 6 year old yellow Labrador Retriever, Merlin, began limping this summer. Our primary vet prescribed Prednisone but when we reduced the dosage, he began limping again. She then took x-rays (of his feet & lungs - to help rule out cancer) and thought he perhaps was suffering from arthritis. She referred us to an Orthopedic Specialist who also believed arthritis or some immune deficiency was going on. He also discovered a heart murmur and enlarged heart due to his slow heart rate (we thought it was slow due to him being such an athlete) which was causing the murmur. He conducted an abdominal sonogram to rule out cancer. The orthopedic wanted to do a fluid tap on his toe joints but wanted to get his heart rate higher before putting him under anesthesia. We brought Merlin's heart rate up with medication (Theophylline ER), he had the fluid tap and the result was osteoarthritis. The orthopedic recommended, along with medications (Tramadol, Gabapentin, & Rimadyl) laser therapy, his office however, did not have the equipment so we have a 3rd vet involved who provides laser and hydrotherapy. She also has him on 3 supplements. We do stretching exercises multiple times a day. We have the Eastern and Western medical approaches working to help Merlin. Merlin is receiving his laser & hydro therapy (we call it his "Spa Day") twice a week but we hope to decrease this since with all of this support in place, he is doing so much better.
