I have a 12 year old Poodle/Bichon named Willis who had a seizure early one morning in May 2013. He had never had one (that I had witnessed) prior to this. I rushed him to our local emergency vet and had him admitted. The vet verified that it was a seizure and stated that first we needed to determine what caused the seizure and once that was determined we could start a treatment program.
Willis had a battery of tests and a brain MRI. The MRI showed a small lesion in his brain and coupled with the tests all signs pointed to Willis having had a stroke sometime in the recent past.
