I maintained this insurance for four or five years paying almost $500 per year in the last years of my dog's life. What was amazing to me was that the year he died, the amount of his bills which VPI reimbursed added up to little more than the annual premium. I think the reimbursement was about $600 on a $1000 surgery. So I perhaps saved a hundred dollars the year of the high expenses while having paid about $2500 in premiums over the years. Plus I had a fair amount of paperwork to do to collect it. I had another dog which I also paid those premiums for which I never did have claims. So, all in all, this experience has not made me an advocate of pet insurance although I'm hearing more favorable reviews of other policies recently.
