Our Labrador retriever suffered a torn ACL which required surgery. After our initial consult with our vet we were shocked to find out what it would cost,, and after a second opinion, we “learned” that this was going to be a very expensive incident. In considering everything, we ultimately decided to use Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital because of their reputation, and the fact that they were staffed 24 hrs a day and someone would be available to monitor our dog during recovery. This was an important factor for my wife, as she previously lost a pet that died unattended after a surgery. Dr Glassel performed TPLO Surgery, and by all accounts all went well. The recovery period of four months was the hardest part – it’s difficult to keep a dog from being a dog for that long – but we survived. I’m pleased to report Jake is now 100%. When we purchased our VPI policy I had not looked at it. To us the insurance was for piece of mind in the event some unforeseen event would occur. I just remember that we opted for the “best coverage” when we purchased it… and I’m glad we did. The policy covered about 75% of our total out of pocket expenses, and we are very pleased with the manner in which the claim was handled by VPI.
