I got my dog in March of 2010 and never thought about pet insurance. In July of that same year he had an accident that set us back $5,000. Without insurance, we had to go 100% out of pocket. Needless to say I found VPI days later and vowed never to get side swiped by a huge medical bill again. Over the past two years VPI has reimbursed us between 80% to 100% on procedures that range from basic pet visits to surgery for repairing a torn ACL (note -- you need to be enrolled for over 12 months before eligible for ACL surgery). I advise all my friends to get pet insurance, and would highly recommend VPI.
