I bought this for 2 Border Collies when I was on the road and didn't want to make the dogsitters worry about the cost if something happened. At the time, it was worth the money for peace of mind. Then I retired, moved to the country, got another accident-prone BC. In the first year and a half, he needed 7 surgeries for various injuries, plus each of the older dogs needed surgery for injury. That is when it started paying for itself. It has consistently done so since. Now I have 4, and recently, the youngster needed a root canal (!) - VPI paid much more than I expected. Very pleased...but I expect if my dogs were less a less active breed, smaller, and/or more confined, I might feel differently.
