I have a 3 year old Samoyed and a 2 year old terrier lab mix and both have had emergency vet care. Our Samoyed, Brady, had two emergency abdominal surgeries and both times we did not have insurance, so 8 thousand dollars later we knew we had to act quick. My parents have greyhounds and they use VPI as well. We enrolled and have had to use the emergency care plan on both of them. The first time our terrier mix ran through wild mushrooms growing in the back yard that poisoned her pretty serverely. And Brady our Samoyed loves to eat socks, which tend to get stuck and cause an obstruction. With both cases we were reimbursed all but our deductible and we could not be happier. There were no surprises, and the claim was processed quickly. The only thing I do wish was different is that the insurance was somewhat like humans, where you have a co-pay and do not have to pay up front. The cost upfront for emergency visits are tremdous and it would help ease the stress of the situation.
