Pros & Cons: Depends on your Plan/ Coverage

Out of 10

We have had VPI for our 2 dogs since the day we rescued each of them, about 4 years total. My parents also have VPI for their 2 dogs so I was familiar with the company. Our male dog has been on the Major Medical Plan, which has been great! While running at the beach one day he just went lame, completely limping and remained this way for months. His vet & orthopedic vet bills were just shy of $500 and VPI reimbursed us for everything! The only downside was VPI was so picky about the documentation and I had to jump through hoops to get certain expenses (leg brace, etc.) approved. I give them a rating of a 7 because our female dog has not had such great luck with VPI. She was on the Standard Plan (these were the days before Major Medical) and no matter what the reason any time she was ill and needed vet care VPI either paid NOTHING or sent a reimbursement check for $2.00 - 20.00, which felt like a slap in the face. It was clear she needed Major Medical too but they wouldn't allow her on it unless she was healthy for 6 Months prior to the renewal period (as if any of us can control our pet's health). FINALLY she is on Major Medical but of course VPI has applied exclusions and her annual premium is much higher than our other dogs, which is disappointing.

I had the same experience. The insurance is a waste of money. To all consumers, save your money and don't purchase the insurance.
