10/10   Saves lots of money!, 2/24/2010

I have had Banfield pet insurance on both of my dogs for four years. The insurance has saved me a large amount of money when I have to take my dogs to the vet. My dogs are rat terrier/chihuahua breed and can be known to have several chronic health issues. My oldest dog has an allergy to one of the vaccinations therefore he has to be dropped off in the morning and remain at the facility for the day. He gets an iv catheter so if he has an allergic reaction to anything the doctor can intervene quickly. I have had to rush my oldest dog to the vet several times for an allergic reaction and the vets have had to administer medications to the dog. There was even one vet that held my oldest dog for 30 minutes after administering the medication for the allergy reaction. The facility was just about to close and the vet stayed extra just for my dog. I was called the next day first thing in the morning to see how the dog was after all that he had went through. But administering the meds and watching the dog during this time cost money but because I have the pet insurance it did not cost me anything. The other good point about having the insurance is that the hospital keeps up with the necessary times that the animals need their shots or a procedure completed. I am not hesitant to take them because I do not have to worry about paying any money for the visit. This is very convenient for me and excellent for my animals. I love the insurance and I have never had any problems with it personally.

5/10   Not sure, 2/11/2010

The staff at Banfield are great. I take my dog for routine wellness procedures every 6 months. They discovered my dog has high liver enzyme when she was 1 year old and put her on antibiotics. I took her back several times for re-testing. Results are inconsistent. Tests are expensive even though it is discounted. It is now 3 years and tests are still not clear. I cannot get another insurance because this may be a ground for "pre-existing condition." I feel I am stucked. If something gets wrong, I may not afford an expensive hospital service as this is not included in their service.

1/10   You get what you pay for . . . ., 1/30/2010

I thought the Banfield Wellness plan was a fantastic idea when I first learned about them shortly after bringing home my new 12 week young pup. I signed the one-year contract. My pup was having what appeared to be recurring UTIs. I dropped her off to get a urinalysis for the UTi. When I returned at the end of the day to pick her up, they told me, with a cheerful smile, that her fecal test was just fine. I asked about the urinalysis. Their faces went blank. I reminded them why I dropped her off. The doctor came out with a dish, and lightheartedly told me they forgot to do it (this actually happened twice) and asked me to take her outside to collect her urine?!?! They couldn't pinpoint the cause of her "UTI" (there were no crystals in her urine) and chalked it up to a food allergy. They gave an antibiotic, and put her on prescription adult food. I took her back after 4 weeks, at which point she was 5 months. Same problem, they drew the same conclusions, gave her more antibiotics, and a more restirctive diet. Between 3-5 months, my Boxer mix gained less than 5 pounds (~27-30 lbs). As soon as I left that appointment, I called my previous vet and scheduled an appointment. They were appalled my puppy was put on such a restrictive diet, let alone to massive amounts of antibiotics they kept giving her. They made the proper diagnosis. Additionally, they wanted to spay her much earlier than she needed because they thought spaying her would help resolve the "UTI" issues she was having. I would highly recommend to anyone considering Banfield to look elsewhere.
