1/10   Horrible coverage!!!!
Not sure how the high ratings made this site. Just submitted a claim for $275 for all covered services and they paid $35. Terrible coverage. Don't waste your money.

2/10   Go with a different company
I have had this insurance for a couple of years with no complaints. I just had a couple minor claims. My dog had a couple ear infections and a hot spot. Then my dog was diagnosed with Cushings and I was so glad to have the insurance, so I thought. They only paid the Cushings for 2 months. My policy renewed in June and now the Cushings is preexisting even though I have had the insurance since June 2008 and my dog was diagnosed with the Cushings in April 2010. Once your policy renews they no longer cover illnesses from the previous year. The only reason I got the insurance was because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to afford vet bills and now the insurance is useless. I had to cancel since I need the money to pay for his medicine. Do your research and get a company that covers illnesses for life and not just for 2 months!!!

10/10   I can't find a better deal!
After reading the review that calls attention to the fine print on this company's policies, specifically the exclusion on coverage for conditions that manifest during the previous policy year, I did a lot of comparison research. I really think this may be a matter of getting the best deal for the money. The routine coverage of $220 per dog, under the preferred policy, just can't be beaten. Even with the allotments within the $220, it all gets used. That's a guaranteed recovery of $440 a year for my two dogs, which reimburses me more than half of the year's premiums, even if no illness occurs. When accident or illness DOES occur, the $50 deductible with 90% reimbursement appears unusual among companies I've found, unless I'm going to pay much more money. In sum, it appears to me that, in order to overcome the disadvantages of Petfirst, I would have to roughly DOUBLE my premiums paid, and would most likely recover nothing during the year. A $200 deductible appears standard with most policies, and with a typical illness, I would not reach that threshhold. I'm into my 3rd year with Petfirst, and the fact is that I've not lost a penny. Each year, I've recovered more than I put in, and so I'm staying with them. I do see that I can overcome the exclusion mentioned by putting a rider on my policy, but that would either double or triple my premium, depending on the level of coverage I chose under that rider. From a statistical standpoint, I can't justify the extra cos

9/10   Sudden pet illness, surgery, death
this year I was notified my pet insurance was increasing. Angered at the cost of healthcare, I cancelled my policies on both my pets. I foolisly thought I would not need it. I never carried health coverage on a pet before and had not needed it, so why pay for something you don't need, right. WRONG...my dog turned 2 in March, a beautiful springer spaniel that we loved more than any dog before. She was of champion breeding stock, from a well known kennel. Parents cleared for any heredity issues, so what could go wrong. She was quiet, not a chewer. Why would I think anything would go wrong. I kept my lost pet insurance, that should take care of my needs...WRONG. She started to limp on her rear leg, no pain, no injury identified by vet. Appeared to be a sprain or sore paw. Put her on pain meds for 4 days, got better immediately. Throwing up food, back to vet. Appeared to be reation to pain meds. Shot for nausea. Great for 2 days, then refused to eat evening meal, very unlike her, won't take bedtime treat, again unlike her. To vet in morning, soon as office open. Xrays negative, lab work good, more tests. insisted we need to check further. Dog not doing any better. emergency surgery revealed hole in stomach. Emergency hospital care following surgery. My beautiful baby died the next morning. The cost quite high with no pet to show for it. I saved 500.00 because of my anger in healthcare costs and payed more than 6 times more in the end. GET PET INSURANCE and keep it. It will keep y

5/10   I have decided to cancel
I bought the insuance for my 2 dogs last year. I just received an email that my plan is going up about 50% and they are raising the deductible. The website shows the old price still. When I tried to call and ask why, I was on hold 30 minutes before I finally gave up and left a message. 3 days later and I am still waiting for my message to be returned. The only bills I had this past year was the yearly checkup and shots and it took 6 weeks to get my money back. I have decided to cancel the insurance and just put the money in a bank account monthly. I'd rather keep the money myself and use it if I have to than give it away 'just in case'

7/10   One disappoitment
I have been mostly pleased with Pet First. When my Boston Terrier was attacked by a fox while in her yard they paid nothing. She was treated by the vet and received 3 shots and 3Rx's because foxes carry rabies, mange plus a variety of other possibilities.Their explanation was "mange was not covered"
Injury/Illness: attacked by fox.   Breed: Boston Terrier
Claim Amount: $100 - $500   Age of Pet: 1 - 8

7/10   They are okay.
This may be my bad, but when I got my dog coverage and we discovered he had heart troubles, we thought as long as we kept the policy renewed, he would be covered. Not so. However, they did pay all other requests on time and without trouble.

2/10   still waiting for reimbursement - a month later
We have been waiting over a month for our $1,000+ reimbursement. It was supodedly processed and put in the mail two weeks ago and we were told yesterday that the US Post Office is the problem. Pet First claims the Post Office set a side a whole bin of their claim checks for two weeks and found them last Friday ! Pet First said the PO mailed them on Friday and this is Wed (5 days later) and we have yet to receive it, the check that was supposedly sent out 15 days ago from Pet First.
