Beagles
|
The small size of the Beagle makes it a popular breed with home and apartment owners alike, and its reputation for strong overall health and long lifespan make it any dog lover’s best friend.
One of the main health concerns Beagles are apt to display has to do with their long, floppy ears. The same trait that make Beagles so lovable and cute can also create issues when airflow is blocked to the air canal and moisture gets trapped within. When this happens, infection is likely to develop; and your Beagle will need a course of antibiotics to avoid any long term impact the infection might otherwise cause.
Similarly, pet health in Beagles can be affected by a painful condition called distichiasis, where the eyelashes grow back into the eye. Prompt medical care is needed to restore pet health when this condition is first detected.
Beagles are also known to be affected by seizures and even epilepsy, for which prescription medication is the best and safest solution. Cancer, most commonly lymphoma, is another pet health issue that Beagle owners may encounter.
The other known health concern Beagles are most commonly associated with is polyarthritis, a situation where the joints are attacked by the dog’s own immune system response. While causes are not completely understood, the condition can be treated successfully with a series of cortisone shots.
